about

A poem about being a kid and racing bicycles.

lyrics

On your marks.
Get set.
Go!

And they're off
Like a pack of tiny jockeys
Atop their mechanical steeds

There’s no high fashion
At this asphalt ascot
Just burst lips and cows licks
Bruised knuckles
And the cry of "square go who’s next?"

The last one to the big tree and back's a jessie
Exclaimed the leader of the pack
Knees scraped, but his confidence fully intact

"Last wan there’s a dobber"
Crys another
And it’s on

A dozen peely Wally weins
In short trousers and plimsolls
Hammer their wee legs on the pedals
In a race to be number one
In a race to be someone

A flock of featherless, clueless chicken
Find direction for the first time
Go
Go
Go
Hurry up
Go,

Move

Oot the way

There’s no fight or flight here
Just pedal, pedal, pedal
Like your life depends on it

Jump the kerb
Dodge the pothole
Mind the dug
Round the bend
It’s not over till it’s over
In the end

Round the big tree
Cross the street
Across the path
Down the lane past time bins
First one back wins

Padal like there’s no tomorrow
Feet flying faster than their knees
It’s all to play for after all

And just as quick as it started it’s over
The Formula One of fun

We have a winner ladies and gentleman

Oh, to be a kid again, where the only race that mattered was to the big tree and back again.
